Brent Mai

Brent has been honored to serve the members of his profession through SLA in a variety of capacities. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 2011 and is currently serving as President of the organization for 2012. Preceding this role, he served as the co-chair of the 2007 (Denver) Annual Conference Committee. As a member of the SLA Board of Directors from 2003-2006 and Division Cabinet Chair, he also served on the Annual Conference Committees for the 2005 (Toronto) and 2006 (Baltimore) Annual Conferences. Brent was a member of the Association’s Finance Committee from 1999-2003.

From 1997-2002, Brent was a member of the Executive Board of the Business & Finance Division serving as Division Chair and Treasurer. For the B&F Division, he has also served as chair of the Membership Committee, the Nominations Committee, the Awards Committee, CUBL Roundtable Coordinator, and as liaison to ALA’s BRASS. He has also been honored to serve for four years on the Division’s Centers of Excellence Awards Committee. Also at the Division level, Brent served on the Strategic Planning Committee for the Food, Agriculture, and Nutrition Division and as the Publications Committee Chair for the Engineering Division. Currently, Brent serves on the editorial review board of the Practical Academic Librarianship: The International Journal of the SLA Academic Division.

After graduating from Aberystwyth with an MSc in Library Studies, I spent a number of years working in development projects around the use of ICT in library contexts, funded by EC, JISC and others. I completed my PhD at Loughborough in 2006. The topic was knowledge sharing among web management professionals, on and off line. I have continued an interest in online community/social media and professional identity in later work.


My main areas of teaching are:
  • Library applications of ICT. I am the coordinator of the MSc in Digital Library Management.
  • Virtual community, social networks and information. This encompasses web2.0 applications like Flickr and also applications in corporate contexts (under the broad heading of KM), e.g. around communities of practice and virtual communities of practice.
  • Digital exclusion.
I have been heavily influenced in my teaching style by the inquiry led approach promoted by CILASS (
In 2010 I completed M.Ed in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (
My dissertation explored students’ experience of space, and this is an interest I have continued, working with colleagues, e.g. using photography to explore academics’ experience of space as teachers and using model making to explore students of perceptions around space and group work, in the context of internationalisation. I have also done other teaching related research, e.g. in the areas of inquiry based learning and digital literacies. I am also interested in the use of multimedia and digital storytelling as assessment methods.
I won a senate award for teaching in 2009-10. I am a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
I am currently Director of Learning and Teaching for the School.

Research interests

My main interests are in online community and use of social media, be that on the open web, eg on Flickr, in organisations (including communities of practice)and in learning contexts. I'm interested in the intersection of information and media/cultural studies paradigms. Most of my research uses qualitative methods.
I am particularly interested in supervising PhDs in the area of online community/social networks.
Internet studies; Communities and networks; Professionalisation and professionalism; Discourse and identity; Visual methods; The choice, implementation and appropriation of information/knowledge systems; Family history, local history and local studies librarianship.

Ana C. Vasconcelos, BA, PGDip, PhD, is Senior Lecturer in Corporate Information Management and Head of the Knowledge and Information Management Research Group at the Information School, University of Sheffield, UK. She has previously lectured at the School of Computing and Management Sciences, Sheffield Hallam University, and at the School of Information Management, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK. Prior to that, she was a researcher at the National Institute Industrial Technology and Engineering (INETI) in Portugal. She is a member of the Peer Review College of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC, UK) and has carried out research evaluation in the field of information technologies and the information society for the European Commission since 1992. Her research interests are in information and knowledge management and information systems adaptation, with a focus on organisational arenas and boundary spanning practices, knowledge absorption and integration, communities of practice and virtual communities, discourse and identity in a variety of contexts.

Dr. Sultan M. Al-Daihani

Dr. Sultan M. Al-Daihani, Assistant Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, College of Social Sciences, Kuwait University. Dr. Sultan was the Head of the IT Unit at the College of Social Sciences. He was the SLA-AGC President during 2008/2009. In these capacities he steered of a number of professional activities. Dr. Sultan conducted a number of consultation and training workshops in the areas of e-government, electronic archiving, social networking, and e-record management. He teaches ICT-related undergraduate workshops and workshops related to digitization and digital library at the graduate level. He has published in the areas of information behavior, social networking, and use of Web 2.0 technologies. Dr. Heather Lea Moulaison’s

Dr. Heather Lea Moulaison’s primary research interests include emerging technolgies in libraries, organization of information, and digital libraries as well as cloud computing in libraries. Dr. Moulaison also has a strong interest in international and comparative librarianship, as evidenced in her ties to Moroccan and Canadian library and information science. Dr. Moulaison has published on these topics, and has presented on them at local, national, and international conferences. Echoing her research interests, Dr. Moulaison's teaching interests include courses on organization of information (including Info Org, Cataloging, Indexing/Abstracting, Metadata) and Emerging Technologies in Libraries. Dr. Moulaison earned a doctorate in Library and Information Science from Rutgers University, (USA) and an MSLIS and an MA in French, both from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (USA).

Affra works at Royal Hospital central medical library as a library manager, since 2005. She is also the e-library and resources manager at the Oman medical speciality board (OMSB) medical information center, since March, 2011 . She also worked as member of the national virtual science library project steering committee and negotiation committee, since 2011. Affra held a degree in Information Management from the University of Sheffield, degree in Medical Librarianship from the Sultan Qaboos University, a degree in General Chemistry from United Arab Emirates University and a certificate in Leadership and Management from the Omani Institute for Management Training. She was also awarded a certificate by Yale University for participating in their Summer Fellowship Program.

Her research work has always achieved a high level of distinction. She held a research concerned ‘Technology and evidence-based decision-making: a necessary synergy for efficient knowledge management in healthcare in Oman?’ This piece of work won the Pfizer Prize for the best dissertation in the general area of scientific or business information from Sheffield University, UK-2010. She had published several articles on the IFLA Serials and Other Continuing Resources Section (SOCRS) newsletter. She have also published two notable papers - the first is “The Importance of Culture in designing e-learning environments” at EDULEARN11, the 3rd annual International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies, and more recently, “Evidence-based medicine among Omani physicians: Awareness, knowledge and application”, a paper which was published in the 15th International Symposium on Health Information Management Research (ISHIMR 2011). The latter paper won the OCLC prize in the ISHIMR conference which took place on the 8-9 September 2011, in Zurich, Switzerland.

Dr Hazel Woodward

Hazel has been University Librarian and Director of the University Press at Cranfield University for over 12 years. Prior to that she was at Loughborough University as Head of Electronic Information Services. Hazel’s research interests include electronic publishing and scholarly communication (the subject of her PhD thesis) and she has published many papers in the professional literature on digital library issues.

She is very active professionally being currently the Chair of the JISC Electronic Information Resources Working group (which oversees national negotiations for e-journal deals) and Chair of the Board of Directors of COUNTER which develops codes of practice for book and journal usage statistics. She also contributes to UKSG activities as Publications Officer and serves on the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC) organising committee. In 2009 Hazel was awarded an MBE (Master of the British Empire) for “services to higher education”.

Kevin Smith, J.D.

As Duke University’s first Scholarly Communications Officer, Kevin Smith’s principal role is to teach and advise faculty, administrators and students about copyright, intellectual property licensing and scholarly publishing .

Kevin holds a Masters of Library Science from Kent State University and has worked as an academic librarian in both liberal arts colleges and specialized libraries. His strong interest in copyright law began in library school and he received a law degree from Capital University in 2005. Before moving to Duke in 2006, Kevin served as the Director of the Pilgrim Library at Defiance College in Ohio, where he also taught Constitutional Law. He is admitted to the bar in Ohio and North Carolina.

Cameron Neylon

Cameron Neylon is a biophysicist who has always worked in interdisciplinary areas and is an advocate of open research practice and improved data management. He currently works as Senior Scientist in Biomolecular Sciences at the ISIS Neutron Scattering facility at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Along with his work in structural biology and biophysics his research and writing focuses on the interface of web technology with science and the successful (and unsuccessful) application of generic and specially designed tools in the academic research environment. He is a co-author of the Panton Principles for Open Data in Science, founding Editor in Chief of Open Research Computation, and writes regularly on the social, technical, and policy issues of open research at his blog, Science in the Open.

Rick Johnson is a leading international authority on scholarly communication and open access to research. Currently he is involved in start-up of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), a new research university near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on the Red Sea.
As the founding Executive Director of SPARC from 1998-2005 and a consultant from 2005-2009, he advanced new models for scholarly communication. Under his leadership, SPARC initiated the movement for public access to publicly funded research and undertook dozens of successful publishing collaborations. Rick is co-founder of BioOne, a successful digital publishing platform for society journals in the biosciences, and has served on the boards of Cornell University’s Project Euclid math publishing initiative and the National Institutes of Health’s PubMed Central biomedical archive.
Before SPARC, he was Senior Vice President of Congressional Information Service, Inc. and University Publications of America. There he sponsored development of the divisions’ first Web-based services and drove dramatic international expansion.
